Later, maybe in college?, I had to read Great Expectations and my mind was blown--I loved it! I have always felt that required summer reading should be a bit "lighter"-- after all, they have all year to get down and dirty with the heavy hitters. And I totally agree with you about the need to include more women writers. I'm waiting for my 4-year-old to get just a bit older and then I plan on blasting him with some Laura Ingalls Wilder and Judy Blume (the younger-kid stuff, no "Are You There God?
